SEO Is an Art, Not a Science


SEO Art



What makes SEO different from most other professions is that no-one really knows the exact answer and no-one ever will. SEO is mostly based on theory and experimentation much like a lot of science, but the difference is that the theory you once thought was concrete, can change overnight by a simple algorithmic change. There are also many different tactics that can be adopted and the same results will be achieved, a combination of on-page and off-page SEO will achieve great results, but the ratio doesn’t have to be the same every time.

The image below shows how you might be able to achieve the same ranking using different levels of on-page and off-page SEO. This however is not a universal strategy and I would suggest it would not be true for more competitive terms.  An example of how this works is if you take one version of a site that has tons of content on a subject and only a few links pointing to the site, compared to another version with less content but more high authority links pointing to it. Each version has its own merits and it’s up to the search engines to decide where to rank them.
 
Google alone has more than 200 ranking factors with many different variations for each, meaning that it’s not a case of one size fits all for SEO strategies. An SEO consultant could use all manners of different techniques and still get the same results as another SEO consultant that used completely different techniques. What it comes down to is doing what you know works and tweaking things when they don’t. I have had experiences where a tactic would work for one website but have no effect on another, showing that there is no right or wrong answer it’s just a matter of finding what works and what doesn’t on a site by site basis.

Not only are there over 200 ranking factors for Google to contend with, we also have to contend with the fact that these ranking factors change all the time, constantly keeping us on our toes, so we will never know every ranking factor or how effective they are. For example the introduction of Social media into SEO meant that there was now a more complex strategy to be used to achieve ranking.

Rand Fishkin of SEOMoz confirmed that Google and Bing do use Twitter and Facebook to influence SEO, which gives an extra dimension to SEO that forces us to take a more creative look at SEO than we perhaps would have a couple of years ago.  I now find myself thinking of strategies that would persuade Twitter followers to retweet my message and my links in order to achieve rankings and also create a viral element to the overall marketing strategy.

The influence of social media on SEO is probably not all that well known but what we do know is that by having many people retweet your link you have a strong chance of ranking and ranking fast too! Danny Dover also of SEOMoz created an experiment to see how twitter would compare to conventional linking in gaining raking for “ending hunger in sierra leone”. The results showed that Twitter has a massive impact and as a result the website that was linked to via tweets was ranking very quickly.

This factor alone shows how SEO is going to have to become more and more creative, not to mention the fact that ASA will start investigating paid links which will mean more creative approaches will have to be adopted to avoid any investigations. Rand Fishkin has made the prediction that “We’ll start to move away from the title “SEO” to something more all-inclusive” in his 7 predictions for SEO in 2011 something that I believe has been happening for a while now and so I don’t see the title changing just starting to encompass more broader marketing strategies.

Why On Page SEO Is Essential For Traffic






Many marketers get so caught up in the rout for traffic that they spend all their time building links. They forget that one of the most vital parts of SEO are the on page feature.

These are not complex for you to do and are something that should be basic when you create a new site. Word press is an ideal platform as it typically lends itself well to search engine optimization.

The 1st step is for you to ensure you have set your title tag correctly. This needs to be 64 characters in length. Any longer and it will be cut off and this will look very odd in the search engine results.

The title tag needs to tell people what your site is about in such a way to entice them in to your web site. It needs to include a keyword that is specific for the page the title tag is on. Every page on your website should have its own unique title tag. Don’t use the same title tag on every page.

Next are your meta keywords and meta description. These tell the search engine spiders what your site is about. They are not massively important to the search engines, as most of them will analyze your site to see what it is really about.

These are important if you are using Adsense as without these meta tags in place, you find your Adsense ads are not focused on your niche.

The meta description is important because it appears in the search engine results. It is 150 characters for you to get people to click on your link and come to your website. You need to be short and enticing in the same sentence.

Your meta keywords and description should also be unique for each page within your site.

Any images on your site have what is known as ALT tags. These are tags which provide an alternative description for the visually impaired. These are noticed by the search engines and can get your images ranking well. Make sure you do not attach the same keyword to too many ALT tags and add the word graphic, picture, image or something similar afterwards. This will again help tell the search engines your website is relevant for those keywords.

On top of this you can include your keyword in the header 1 (h1) tag on your page, i.e. the title in the text. This is another indicator to the search engines that your site is important for that keyword.

Using your keyword well within the text of your page and including related keywords around it will also help your site rank.

You must make sure you do not spam or keyword stuff any of your pages because it is a certain way to get yourself dropped from the search engine results.

By performing some simple on page SEO optimization you can gain the advantage in the search engines.

Search Engine Ranking and Website Traffic


To increase website traffic and search engine rankings, the following important tips are worth applying to your website.
A good search engine ranking will definitely result in increased web traffic to your site, whereas a low search engine ranking will not produce any traffic, wasting all your SEO efforts.
Obviously, to attract visitors’ attention, your website should consist of extremely valuable content. “Content is the King!” This is absolutely true. In fact, content is the soul of any website, and good content is liked by all the visitors.
Apart from good content, your commercial website should consist of products or services to present them to your visitors. If you are able to fulfill your visitors’ needs, your website will become hugely popular. But to attract this traffic, you must first optimize your web pages so that they rank very high in the search engine result pages (SERPs).
Keywords are important tools that attract targeted traffic. The first hundred words of the content are the most important from the viewpoint of the search engines. These set of words normally indicate the theme of your web page.
If the search engine crawlers find relevant keywords placed in these first few words then they give more value to your remaining content. Place your web page’s primary and supplemental keywords within these first few words in your page content. Also, spread these keywords evenly throughout the rest of the document.
To gain targeted and massive web traffic, do complete research on which keywords are suitable for your content, and are used extensively by the searchers to find solutions to their problems. Use the right combination of the keywords and key phrases to attract target visitors.

Use your best keywords and key phrases in the Title, META tags, Headers, body of content, etc. Strive to get the keyword density between 2 to 7 per cent of the total content. The search engines will consider any higher keywords density as keyword spamming.
Concentrate on making your web page and the entire website elegant and easy to navigate. Site navigation is also considered as a major search engine optimization method. Weed out any link that is not consistent with the site’s theme.
Also, look for any “dead-links”. Take care that none of the web pages are incomplete or are still under construction. Your site visitors must be able to navigate easily between relevant web pages through links placed appropriately, for example, these links should blend inside the article at appropriate places without making them look obvious.
When you build up a sales hype, then a link should exist just inside or at the end of the paragraph that takes the visitor to the product’s page. All the web pages should have a link to the Home page of the website.
Your links should also contain appropriate keywords and not just something like “Click here…” Each web page on your website should be interesting and relevant to your site’s theme without making the site monotonous. The skillfully created navigation links and the content will always make the visitor stay longer on your site.
Once you have plenty of web pages created, submit every web page along with the home page to all the top search engines. Also submit your website to the various web directories in their appropriate sections to get targeted traffic to your website.
Try and get plenty of relevant back links to your website from quality and relevant websites, forums, blogs, and web directories. Such sites should be popular, high ranking in the search engines’ SERP, and also should have good traffic. Try and get back links to your other web pages along with the home page. This will ensure that your website will have an all-round growth in popularity and traffic.
